In this post, I’ve rounded up a selection of some of my favourite classic designer chairs that feature on my dream wish list. All these chairs are designed, or based on a design between the 50’s and 60’s. All these chairs boast top quality craftsmanship and they are still effortlessly stylish. And I am sure they will be for many years to come.
CH24 | Wishbone Chair
This is definitely my favourite chair at the moment. The Wishbone chair was designed by Hans J Wegner especially for Carl Hansen & Søn, and has been in continuous production since 1950. The natural materials of this chair are the main selling point for me. Combine a few of these chairs with linen table cloths and a wooden dining table like this photo bellow for timeless look. They can also be dotted around a table with other style chairs for an eclectic style. (£761, Skandium.com)
Portuguese ROOTS Chair
Designed by Alexandre Caldas for AROUNDtheTREE, this chair is directly inspired by the Goncgalo chair from Arcalo created in 1953. I really like the striking angles of these chairs, and there is also a cork seat opinion which means you don’t have to compromise style for comfort. Furthermore, take a look at this limited edition chair (bottom), which is inspired by portuguese tiles and traditional craft. They have been painstakingly hand-painted to perfection. (Price on request, aroundthetree.eu)
J110 Chair & Fanett Chairs
I’ve put both these chairs on because they’re very similar, and I couldn’t choose between them. The J110 Windsor Chair (left) was designed by Poul M. Volther in the 1960s, it is now being manufactured by Danish brand HAY. It is part of the FDB Chairs & Tables family – a collection of dining chairs and tables designed to complement each other. (£219, nest.co.uk)
The Fanett dining chair (right) by Finnish designer, IImari Tapiovaara were designed in 1949. He is famous for the creation of school, university and army pieces of furniture and has created a great range of chairs you should also check out. (£612, for a set of 3 from pamono.co.uk)
Vilhelm Wohlert Piano chair
The ultra slender Piano Chair was designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Wohlert in 1955. Designed for P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik in 1955, it boasts a skeleton-like structure and comes in a range of finishes. If you want to bag yourself one of these iconic design pieces you’ll have to search vintage shops or request a price from Stellaworks. They have also released a limited edition indigo leather range (bottom image) which uses the Japanese tradition of dying wood and leather. Price on request.
Harry Bertoia’s Wire Chairs
Lastly, something a little different from the above styles. Harry Bertoia designed his iconic wire furniture collection, in 1952. This includes the Side chair and famous Diamond chair. Knoll are currently making these with a range of colour combinations. I love how modern these classic chairs look and how well they age! See bottom photo for a lovely rusted version. Add a faux sheepskin rug from IKEA for extra comfort. (£956, Knoll.com)
